“These hate campaigns follow the same lines: There is always a shadowy omnipresent ‘PR’ (run by a management company or movie studio or record company) secretly controlling everything. However the woman is the chief villain. She may be just a “hired hand” paid to play a role, but she, not management or PR, is always the true evil genius secretly controlling everything. The male star is inevitably naïve and innocent or just plain abused and in need of rescue. There is usually a wronged true love in the background, though the true love may be a male or (or more rarely a female) co-worker, or an idealized hypothetical future love. Within each fangroup, leaders and followers emerge, sometimes with internal factions. The leaders always have anonymous and fiercely protected insider sources who confirm all their theories. Those “in the know” are superior to the sheep who buy mainstream PR, and firmly believe their brave attempts at outing the truth are being closely monitored by the star’s panicked management.”

  • louche-laid-back-glory:

“The crux of the tinhat narrative has the celebrities in question being closeted against their will, often at the behest of a villainous PR department so hellbent on preserving the monetary interest of (straight) female fans that they have sunk their nasty, conspiratorial claws in every part of a celebrity’s social life. The idea that a management team would go to these exorbitant lengths doesn’t hold up. But the motivation to believe even the most questionable insider information is not fueled by misconceptions about closeting in the entertainment industry. Instead, tinhatting draws from the desire to be more informed than other “mainstream” fans, positioning oneself as a key expert.”

I feel ya, anon. But, like I have said numerous times: Not Just Larries. Larries promulgated this behavior but it has oozed over into a mindset taken on by many who were not Larries and/or are new to the fandom. But it isn’t limited to the former-1D fandom. It is endemic in fandom culture. Over the last 5-10 years this mindset has infiltrated many fandoms – nothing we see is real, it’s all fake, there are things being hidden from us that we have a RIGHT to know, everyone is gay, I own them, I control them, their lives are performative for ME – they are my paperdolls to do with what I please, I am special because I can see what everyone else can’t, if it does not go my way I will do what I can to destroy it. It’s a tinhat playbook at this point. The problem is that this is so normalized, that many “genuinely believe” that they are simply having fun, that it’s not “that deep” – but when you are projecting your wants and needs and fantasies to this extent onto someone, I do feel it’s problematic, and unhealthy. As for the specific projections onto Harry… well, I have curated my dash, blacklisted tags, used Tumblr Saviour, in an attempt to not even have to see that rubbish. I have a real problem personally when I see “fans” saying things about the male friends and acquaintances in Harry’s life that they would never dare say about the women in his life (the list is LOOOOONG). That right there is a red flag for me. There is a lot of fetishizing going on that is very Larrie-like and dismissing it as a cute headcanon is disregarding everything that has occurred over the last 8 years because it’s a damn slippery slope. I get it – there always has been and always will be thirst over an attractive celebrity. I’m not immune. But for heaven’s sake, you are putting things on a public forum - a modicum of restraint and respect shouldn’t be a difficult thing to attain. A friend pointed out to me an aspect of sexual fantasies that I took to heart, that there are circumstances where the fantasy does not always have to involve you because of your own personal sexuality, but when you remove yourself from the fantasy simply because gay sex is so hot and women interfere with that fantasy, my ICK-meter goes to 100. That’s fetishizing, my friend. With a good dose of misogyny. And this is all simply my opinion, plenty will disagree and the argument will be “it’s just fun!” “it’s not that serious”. Well, OK. Have your “fun”. Just be aware of what you are doing and why you are doing it. A little insight and self-reflection never hurts in any aspect of your life. Besos, anon.

The thing that gets me about all of this is all you need to do is stop and think about how invasive they were when it came to hacking people to find out information about harry and yet never once did they find any Larry *proof* you don’t think they realized that? Yet they continued to spew this bullshit and harass and invade their families privacy anyway. In fact I think the opposite happened where they would actually come across proof that Larry in fact *wasnt* real and they still ignored it and made excuses. If there were any truth to what they were saying there is no doubt they would have come across something to prove it in all their invasions of privacy. The big larries doing that absolutely knew it was bullshit and that it wasn’t true and that’s just not excusable.

like now that harries have decided to champion the force against larries it’s suddenly this Huge Issue that has to be stopped bc broke harry’s privacy in a gross ass way but nvm the fact that they told louis his son could die, they wished his son was dead, they sent death threats to his family, said that jay’s death was part of the narrative and made her death all about larry like i could go on that’s how much y’all haven’t done a gd thing until your fave is the one directly impacted by some of their bullshit behavior and??? honestly i’m tired of y’all only recognizing shitty things if your fave is involved where otherwise you don’t care or get involved bc “fuck louis” amirite

Where was all of this anger when a larrie called Louis and told him he hoped his baby died? Or when his dying mother was bullied into deleting photos of her only grandson on her social media? Or when his little sisters were harassed and subjected to fowl language for daring to say they missed their nephew? Or when Louis’ parentage was questioned so intensely and horrifically that a Buzzfeed article went viral and he was followed for days by TMZ trying to catch a glimpse of his child to see if he was a doll? Or when every single journalist who dared to ask about Freddie/Eleanor was harassed endlessly to the point that interviews just stopped? Or when the larries openly mocked Freddie for wearing a helmet and said he’d probably been dropped on his head? Or when websites were created to specifically harass Eleanor and Briana and gleefully shared throughout fandom? Or when Briana was accused of being a coke whore and had porn videos uploaded in her name? Where? Was? This? Rage????
